What do Michael Jackson, Ryan Gosling, and I have in common?
Busboys is now #5 in the world (and why that number isn’t even the point)
Hope everyone’s been doing well. I’ve been off raising Romantical’s friends and family seed round, which has been going great. Can’t wait to share more on that soon.
In the meantime: Busboys, the movie we made with David Spade and Theo Von that had its theatrical run in April, is now available on VOD.
You can watch it at home right now. And as of today, it’s a top five film in the world.
I want to talk for a second about why that matters, and why the distribution strategy behind it is the real story.
A few LinkedIn “experts” were quick to point out that our $4 million opening wasn’t exactly Obsession numbers. Fair. But most of the people making that call have never set foot on a film set, and they’re missing the bigger picture.
David and Theo own this movie.
That means they didn’t just get a paycheck and a theatrical window. They hold majority ownership in the VOD profits, and they own their IP forever. Spinoffs, merch, future films, brand deals, whatever future they hold for the film.
That’s the part I’m most excited about, not just for this film but for where filmmaking is headed.
\You can make something high quality on an economically sane budget, put it out into the world, and keep ownership of it forever. That ownership is the asset.
It’s one of the biggest lessons I took from making Busboys, and it’s directly shaping how I’m building Romantical.
If you want a comedy to throw on this weekend, brain fully off or fully on, check out our movie! It’s on all major platforms now. Spread the word if you enjoyed it.
Thanks for always being here.
xo,
Jonah
